Gradual Release Model - "I do, You do, We do"
Students are taught the stages of the writing processes which are planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. These stages are taught with mini lessons, short lessons of approximately 15 to 20 minutes, through the gradual release model (GRM). The GRM is modeled by me, the teacher. I demonstrate the lesson as the students watch and ask questions. Next, we practice the lesson as a class. Lastly the student independently practices the lessons. During independent learning, I continue to guide and assess each student’s understanding and learning of the lesson. It is important for me, the teacher, to remember to teach one component of writing at a time, and to break each step down, as the student’s learning emerges through the levels of the writing process.
