Independent Reading
The goal of independent reading is for all students to read for comprehension, to acquire fluency, and proficiency in reading. Students read a collection of genre’s on their own or with partners at their reading levels. An example of independent reading is D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read).

* Challenges the reader to work on his/her own and to use strategies on a variety of texts
* Challenges the reader to solve words independently while reading texts well within his/her control
