Authors write for many purposes. In my classroom during writer’s workshop, I use mentor texts to enhance my mini lessons to teach students to read and listen like writers. An example of a mentor text is Yen Shen: A Cinderella Story from China.I used Yen Shen: A Cinderella Story from China to analyze how the author wrote the story using temporal words. I also use mentor text in my classroom to teach students to pay close attention to the author’s intent of persuading, informing or entertaining the reader. Students analyze and compare mentor text as examples to expand their ideas and write for the reader.
I created a writing unit plan to align with the reading and writing Common Core State Standards. (Click on Common Core State Standards link below) The 2nd grade unit plan focus is to strengthen students’ writing through focused revision and editing. In this unit plan students will utilize the following tools to further develop their author’s craft: Students will strengthen their writing through focused revisions and learn how to hook the reader with an interesting lead. Students will also learn the importance of using juicy temporal words to move the reader through the story’s events. I used mentor text within the unit to demonstrate examples of interesting leads, temporal words, why it is important to use them, and how they are used in writing. My unit calendar is available for you to view along with the rubric I created as the final unit assessment.
